Silk Sonic - An Evening With Silk Sonic
For the friends of: Parliament, Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes
Genre: Soul, funk, R&B, hip hop
Favorite track(s): 'Fly As Me', 'After Last Night' and 'Smokin Out The Window'
Random words: pleasure
Basically everybody seems to love 'Silk Sonic'. I am not an exception. The album is just so smooth, flowing nicely, it's a pure pleasure to listen to it. The old-school soul and funk combined with a few hip hop elements make everything sound fresh but certainly show respect to the roots. With 'Bruno Mars' and 'Anderson .Paak' you know that there are always funny and clever lines and this album is not an exception. I like the idea of not making this album too long. Adding a few more songs would probably make the whole album include a few fillers which are now totally missing. Both 'Bruno Mars' and 'Anderson .Paak' are really shining, not forgetting 'Bootsy Collins'.
Willie The Kid - Keep Watching the Fly
For the friends of: Wu-Tang Clan, Roc Marciano, Meyhem Lauren
Genre: hip hop
Favorite track(s): 'YCBWR', 'Booby Trap' and 'Rarefied Air'
Random words: vintage
Last year I discovered 'Willie The Kid' through his album 'Capital Gains'. Instantly he became one of my favorite rappers of all time. 'Keep Watching the Fly' is again quite short album being only 25 minutes but this suites well for me. Lately too many rap albums have been way too long loosing the listeners interest being full of fillers. The beats on the album are well made building a solid base for 'Willie's flow. Beats include awesome moments with beautiful string loops while some of them are slightly darker. All four featuring MCs have really found their place on the album but for me 'Rigs' and 'ANKHLEJOHN' stand out. Big plus for one of the coolest album covers this year! 'Willie The Kid's music is hip hop at its purest and should definitely need more recognition from the hip hop scene!
Shaw Calhoune - MARIANA EP
For the friends of: Ka, billy woods, Pink Siifu
Genre: hip hop, abstract hip hop
Favorite track(s): 'Swim With The Sharks', 'Piccard' and 'Trieste'
Random words: ring nebula
'MARIAN' by the underground rapper 'Shaw Calhoune' is full of brilliant tracks that needs slow cooking. It grows into you repeat after repeat, or vice versa. Most of the tracks are made almost fully without clear beats. In another words the beats are compiled with other instruments than bass and drums. This gives nicely room for 'Calhoune's voice and flow. At times there's an interesting balance of laid back beats and slightly aggressive flow. This creates nice and distinctive vibe for the release. Another great thing is a distant psychedelic atmosphere behind the beats.
