Apple Music Introduces "Made With AI" Label for AI-Generated Content

Apple Music has introduced a new “Made With AI” label for music generated using artificial intelligence (AI), requiring record labels and distributors to tag such content. The move, announced by Apple in a memo to industry partners on August 20, will make these tags visible to listeners later this year.
The requirement comes as part of Apple Music’s ongoing effort to address the growing use of AI in music creation. Since March, the platform has been using AI Transparency Tags to flag AI-generated content across tracks and videos. However, rather than detecting AI content itself, Apple relies on record labels and distributors to include these tags.
This approach contrasts with Spotify’s recent announcement regarding an “AI Persona” badge for artist profiles, which will be reviewed by the company itself in addition to relying on self-disclosed credits. Deezer has also developed its own technology to detect AI-generated tracks and label them accordingly.
The introduction of this new label aligns with broader regulatory requirements set by the EU’s AI Act, which mandates that providers of generative AI systems embed machine-readable markers in their content from August 2 onwards. Suno, one of the services affected, has stated plans to adopt audio watermarking and fingerprinting to help identify and tag AI-generated tracks.
As the music industry grapples with the implications of AI-generated content, Apple’s move underscores its commitment to transparency and regulation compliance. The introduction of the “Made With AI” label is expected to provide clearer identification for these tracks across streaming platforms, facilitating better tracking and management by record labels and distributors.
