Indie-pop aficionados Giant Killers are set to release their latest single, “Around the Blocks,” on August 2nd through Little Genius Recordings. This track is the second single from their widely praised debut album, Songs From The Small Places.

“Around the Blocks” is a tribute to the communities that shaped the band’s outlook on life. It’s a poignant anthem for those who press on despite not having the ideal head start. Michael and Jamie of Giant Killers describe the song as both deeply personal and universally relatable. Originally a fan favorite from their early days opening for Blur and touring with Dr. Robert (of Blow Monkeys) and Nick Heyward, the 2024 version of the track aims to captivate a new generation of listeners.

The band, consisting of Jamie Wortley (guitar, keys, lead vocals) and Michael Brown (bass, keys, brass, vocals), first caught the industry’s eye when signed to MCA Records in 1995. Though their debut album never saw the light of day, Giant Killers have finally reclaimed their music and are seeing it shine once more. Their efforts have been met with enthusiastic responses, with one review even dubbing “Around the Blocks” as “ludicrously catchy” and suggesting it might be “the best song the Lightning Seeds never wrote.” This acclaim has led to their addition to the Shiiine On Festival’s lineup alongside none other than the Lightning Seeds themselves.

The band’s resurgence has also captured the attention of BBC Radio 5 Live. Presenter Patrick Kielty recently invited them back to the BBC’s live lounge for a special Euros edition ahead of the England vs. Spain final, where the duo took song requests from passionate fans. Their performance at Teddy Rocks festival in Dorset further showcased their vibrant stage presence, delivering a memorable set from both the main stage and among the festival-goers.

Giant Killers' nostalgic 90s sound has resonated with today’s music press, earning praise for its “timeless appeal” and “deft songwriting charm.” Beyond their current success, the band has maintained an active presence in the music scene, performing at Glastonbury, opening for Lionel Richie at Proms in the Park, touring with Squeeze, and supporting Motown legend Edwin Starr. They even had their moment of fame as a sticker in Smash Hits!

With their new single, Giant Killers continue to bridge past and present, reminding fans of their enduring appeal and inventive spirit.
