The estate of the late former Mastodon member Brent Hinds has filed a lawsuit against the Atlanta metal band, claiming that the guitarist is still owed money for his share in the group. Hinds died in an August 2025 motorcycle crash just five months after Mastodon announced they would ‘mutually decide to part ways’ with the guitarist. The estate claims that when Hinds passed away, he and the band had not reached a deal to relinquish his ownership stake in Mastodon — including music, merchandising, and more. After Hinds' death, the estate was given $80, 000 to buy out the share, which they have yet to cash.
The lawsuit also alleges that even after Hinds left, the band used images of him on promotional materials for their new album Marrow Deep, including a cover featuring what the estate describes as a face resembling Hinds. Mastodon has denied any ill intentions in a statement and is prepared to defend against the lawsuit, though no comment will be made publicly. The estate further claims that while Hinds' departure was kept private when he left the band, Mastodon members later talked openly about his exit, citing issues with substance abuse.
