A conversation with The Paper Monsters
"Honey" captures a deep sense of love and connection. Can you share the inspiration behind the song?
Hi, I'm really happy that I have come across it. It is literally just that. It's about when you meet someone and you're every thought from when you wake up to going to sleep is about that person...
The production has an ethereal quality. What was your vision for the sonic atmosphere of "Honey"?
I wanted it to be big, dreamy and epic... This is how I love and feel like love is. It's an epic emotion. All encompassing and when you embrace love your life is dreamy.
How did you approach blending the themes of love and modern communication in the song?
I actually wrote the song about 20 years ago. For me, modern communication can hinder love. I don't want to message someone I'm Falling in live with, I want to talk to them, hear their voice, see their face... It's a very basic way of communication that is missing in too many people's worlds.
What was the most challenging aspect of capturing the emotions of "Honey" during the production process?
I self-record and self-produce so trying to get those emotions represented sonically was a frustration. However, I'm very happy with how it ended up. Like most songwriters/producers, the final recording wasn't exactly how I heard it in my head.
What is a typical day in your life as an artist?
This is a hard one... I run an events company promoting over 150 concerts at medium sized venues and teach maths 3 days a week...Every time I write something, whether it be a new idea or developing an old idea...Τhankfully at the moment ideas and creativity is flowing. It's actually flowing too much and trying to remain focused one song is proving difficult.
What worked for you marketing-wise?
Musosoup has been an amazing way of finding brands like your own. I have also used Spotify showcase and a few other playlisting companies...
What advice or tips would you give to new artists?
Keep going regardless of what others think... I found it really liberating once I realized and accepted that 99% of people don't like a particular song, tv show, film etc... As long as you get excited and love what you're producing, who cares what anyone else thinks?
What do you think of AI in music?
I've used it once... I was terrified by the results lol... It was actually a really catchy tune... like everything in life, if it's used for the greater good, then why not? Regardless of how good AI music gets, it will never be able to perform to 100 people at your local live music venue, or sell out a stadium world tour... I think we'll be fine until the corporate labels replace all songwriters with AI... Business is business I suppose.
Tell us about your latest or upcoming release.
So, I have about 30 songs all close to being release-ready... Eclectic is probably the best word to describe them...
